Capella Alchemica: mass, motets and hymns to the Virgin by Claudio Monteverdi Arsys Bourgogne Richard Myron, violone Andrea Damiani, theorbo Sébastien d'Hérin, organ Conductor: Luca Guglielmi Program Description and little background This program proposes to explore the composer’s repertory with his “capella”. This vocal group had several singers per voice, and united children’s voices, the “pueri cantores”, male falsettisti, together with tenor and bass, always accompanied by organ basso continuo, often strengthened by a theorbo and a violin. The music of this program was published between 1620 (Motets and Litanies) and 1650 (Masse and Laudate pueri) including the famous Selva Morale e Spirituale (Second Magnificat) of 1640. Certain Canzoni de Girolamo Frescobaldi “a due bassi” which are for theorbo and violin accompanied by the organ, allow us to appreciate the instrumental composition which was already well-developed in Monteverdi’s days. Also published in Venice in 1634, they are a sign of the flourishing and fame of musical edition already gained by the capital of the Serenissima as the worldwide centre of expanding knowlege in the 16th and 17th centuries.
