Heinrich Biber (1644-1704) is well know as a fine Bohemian craftsman who founded the German violin-making school. But we are inclined to forget that he was also a reknowned composer, Kappellmeister to the Archbishop of Salzburg (then the musical capital of Europe and future cradle of a certain young Mozart….). Dedicated to Biber, this recording pays homage both to his talent and to the expressive qualities of his music. It contains part of the Requiem in F Major, as poignant as it is rare to hear, but also four previously unrecorded offertoriums from the manuscripts of Salzburg Cathedral. Dr Hintermeier, director of the Salzburg archives and an eminent musicologist, greatly assisted with this project, which required reconstruction on the scale of the splendour of the Austrian cathedral at the end of the 17 th century.
